What to Do After a Burst Pipe: A North Texas Checklist

Step-by-step actions for the first hour after a pipe bursts, from shutting off water to calling your insurer.

Hard freezes in North Texas, like the February 2021 winter storm, can burst pipes in attics, exterior walls, and garages. Pipes also fail from old fittings and supply lines. Here is what to do.

In the first 15 minutes

  1. Shut off the main water. Most North Dallas homes have a shutoff near the street meter or where the line enters the house. Know where yours is before you need it.
  2. Turn off power to wet areas at the breaker if you can do it safely. Never stand in water to reach a panel.
  3. Move people, pets, and valuables out of the wet area.

In the first hour

  1. Document everything with photos and video.
  2. Call a licensed plumber to repair the pipe.
  3. Call a restoration company to extract water and start drying.
  4. Call your insurer and write down the claim number.

Freeze prevention for next time

  • Insulate pipes in attics and exterior walls.
  • Drip faucets and open cabinet doors on sinks along exterior walls during hard freezes.
  • Disconnect garden hoses and cover outdoor faucets.
  • Keep heat on even if you travel.
